Facebook introduced Instant Articles in May 2015 with the aim of allowing publishers on its platform to provide users with faster loading times and richer media. And recently, Meta - the parent company of Facebook said that this feature will no longer appear after April 2023.
The demise of Instant Articles continues a trend of underinvestment in news content across the Facebook platform, as the company said in late July that it will no longer pay for aggregated content for its News tab. ie to reallocate resources for video experiences using artificial intelligence.
Meta followed that up by revealing earlier this month that the non-Bulletin newsletter platform would be shutting down early next year.
A spokesperson for Meta said in a statement, "Currently, less than 3% of what people around the world see in Facebook's feed are posts with links to news articles. And as we said earlier this year, as a business, it doesn't make sense to overinvest in areas that don't align with user preferences."
