MediaTek will launch a phone that supports satellite communication in early 2023

In addition to 6G, it looks like there will be a new trend emerging in communications. Apple kicked it off with the introduction of a Satellite communication system with the iPhone 14 series . Now, MediaTek and British firm Bullitt are teaming up to launch the " first satellite-to-mobile messaging phone ".

The systems that MediaTek and Bullitt want to implement are quite different. The new feature enables seamless messaging between one user connected to a satellite and another connected to a regular cellular network. Reportedly, Apple's satellite communication system only allows communication with emergency services in two ways: messaging or location sharing.

The project has been in development for 18 months. Earlier this year, MediaTek demonstrated its NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) modem. The system has been tested in laboratory conditions, determining the connection with a satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Bullitt-built phone will connect and send a message via satellite in just 10 seconds. The device will switch to a satellite connection when it loses the ability to receive cellular and Wi-Fi signals. The first devices with MediaTek chips and two-way satellites will appear in Q1/2023. The ultra-durable phones will have free service, at least the first year.

Bullitt makes rugged phones for some brands like CAT. These are good products for those who work in harsh environments or venture through remote places. The new satellite communication system will be a plus for these phones.
