Netflix has been working to build its gaming platform over the past few months with a growing library of mobile games on Android, but it looks like its gaming business is about to expand. According to the report, Netflix is in the process of building an AAA PC game (big budget game).
Sources from Engadget have spotted a job listing from Netflix looking for a director role based in Los Angeles and will lead work on a brand new AAA PC game .
It's not clear what the game will be like, but the listing calls for an ideal candidate with experience with shooting games, online games, and experience with rapid prototyping in Unreal Engine.
Ideally, the game would "deserve" to be adapted into a Netflix show, suggesting that Netflix is building a game on a grand scale. Another listing for the chief engineer mentions “3rd person action RPG”.
Netflix first hinted at its broader gaming ambitions recently with the opening of a Los Angeles-based studio, with former Overwatch director Chacko Sonny heading the studio. Netflix has also hinted at working on a cloud gaming platform that will open the door to higher quality games for Netflix subscribers on mobile devices and elsewhere.
Of course, it remains to be seen how this will play out. Building an AAA game takes a lot of time and resources. Amazon famously failed with its first attempt, Crucible and Google shut down Stadia Games & Entertainment before the studio even had a chance to release an AAA-rated game on Stadia (which will also shut down in January).
What do you expect from Netflix's first large-scale game?
