Instagram is testing a new feature called Candid Challenges, which has a striking resemblance to BeReal, a photo-sharing app that's been very popular lately.
This new Instagram feature that is currently unreleased was discovered by Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer known for decompiling the app's source code and finding the first versions of an upcoming update. An Instagram spokesperson confirmed the feature was an "internal prototype" but declined to provide further details.
According to Paluzzi, Instagram users participating in the Candid Challenge will see notifications at different times each day to take photos of their surroundings. When prompted, both the front and rear cameras will activate together, giving the user a two-minute window to take a photo. Content shared through challenges will appear on the user Story.
This new feature is quite similar to BeReal, a selfie application and photo sharing platform that is attracting users recently. BeReal also prompts users to take photos with the phone's front and rear cameras at a random time each day. The daily reminder also expires in two minutes, after which the user can see all the photos shared by their friends that day.
It's not yet clear if Instagram intends to launch the feature. An Instagram spokesperson described the feature as an "internal prototype", with "no external testing". But the fact that Instagram is testing it shows that they are at least considering the official release of the feature.
BeReal has become a phenomenon with a large user base of GenZ and has been growing in popularity over the past few months. BeReal is currently at the top of Apple's App Store, on both Instagram and Facebook. BeReal is also among the top ten most popular free apps this summer.
