New EU law officially comes into effect: Lightning port fate is clear

Earlier today, the European Parliament passed a law forcing smartphones  and a range of other accessories to be equipped with USB Type-C charging ports, starting from the end of 2024. Apple is certainly the company that suffers when many devices device is still using the Lightning port.

According to this new law, Apple needs to remove the Lightning port to equip a USB Type-C port, it is not clear whether Apple will make a variant exclusively for the European market, or remove the Lightning port altogether. Macrumors surmised the list of devices that needed to be changed:

  • iPhone (most likely from the iPhone 15 Series).
  • Cheap iPad (the iPad is still equipped with a Lightning charging port).
  • AirPods charging case .
  • Apple Accessories: MagSafe Power Bank , Magic Keyboard , Magic Trackpad , Magic Mouse, Apple EarPods headphones , Beats products .

Apple introduced the Lightning port in 2012 with the iPhone 5, replacing the 30-pin port on the iPhone 4 Series and claiming it was the modern charging standard for the next decade. Currently, the Cupertino corporation seems to no longer "regret" the Lightning port when many iPad models are equipped with a USB Type-C charging port.
