The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) intends to modify the name so that users will not be confused during the purchase and use process. This is part of a plan to revamp the brand identity that was launched last year, with the logo, straps and packaging.
USB-IF President Jeff Ravencraft said it was an effort to make it clear to everyone what quality the cable they're buying is going to be, and what the data transfer and charging speeds are.
SuperSpeed (also known as USB 3) has appeared more than a decade ago, USB-IF thinks the phrase "SuperSpeed" is confusing, so it wants to change it to "USB 10 Gbps" instead of "SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps".
As well as "USB 4 20 Gbps" will be changed to "USB 20 Gbps". If it is a standard USB Type-C plug certified by USB-IF itself, it is necessary to specify the transfer rate as well as the charging capacity.
This change only applies to products that meet the USB-IF standard, because USB is an open standard, so manufacturers can still use the term "SuperSpeed" if they want. However, if users want to know related information, they still need to read the spec sheet, for example, whether the wire supports outputting the display using DisplayPort, or is compatible with a specific technology, etc.
